The North American TBF Avenger was an American carrier-based torpedo bomber used primarily during World War II. Designed by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, the TBF Avenger was a key element of American naval aviation during the fighting in the Pacific theatre. Entering service in 1942, the aircraft was used to attack surface targets, especially enemy ships. Its three-person crew consisted of a pilot, gunner and operator. The TBF Avenger was armed with a machine gun and could carry torpedoes, bombs and rockets. Its participation in the Battle of Midway in 1942 was crucial to the success of American naval aviation. After the end of World War II, the TBF Avenger was gradually replaced by newer designs but remained in use until the 1960s. This plane gained considerable fame as a reliable combat machine, able to survive even heavy damage and return to the aircraft carrier safely!
